PE

The Vision

At Pakeman, we believe that Physical Education (PE) plays a vital role in developing healthy, confident, and active learners. Our aim is to foster a love of movement, teamwork, and personal growth through a diverse and inclusive PE curriculum. Using the Beyond the Physical scheme, we ensure that children build the physical skills, knowledge, and mindset needed to enjoy lifelong participation in sport and physical activity. Through high-quality teaching, enrichment opportunities, and strong community links, we encourage our pupils to embrace a healthy lifestyle, challenge themselves, and develop resilience both on and off the field.

Curriculum Coverage

Our PE curriculum is designed to meet the National Curriculum requirements while reflecting our school’s values. Across all year groups, we develop fundamental movement skills, tactical awareness, teamwork, and a strong understanding of health and fitness.

In 2-Plus, Nursery and Reception, PE is focused on physical development, one of the prime areas of learning in the EYFS framework. Children are encouraged to be active throughout the day, with opportunities for free movement in outdoor learning areas. Children develop:

  • Gross motor skills (running, jumping, climbing, balancing)
  • Fine motor skills (grip strength, coordination, control)
  • Spatial awareness and movement control through games and activities
  • Confidence and enjoyment in physical activity
  • Children in Nursery and Reception also have weekly PE lessons, following the Beyond the Physical scheme of work.

In Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, we follow Beyond the Physical, which provides a progressive, engaging, and inclusive approach to physical education, ensuring all children have opportunities to develop physical skills, social skills, and mental well-being. We teach PE in a progressive way, ensuring that all pupils build skills over time. Key areas of focus in KS1 and KS2 include:

  • Fundamental movement skills (agility, balance, coordination)
  • Team sports (football, basketball, netball, hockey, tag rugby)
  • Individual/small group sports (athletics, gymnastics, dance)
  • Outdoor and adventure activities
  • Swimming and water safety
  • Health and fitness education

We use a scheme of work called Beyond the Physical

At Pakeman, we are committed to ensuring that children have high quality teaching in PE. Children receive weekly PE lessons from a specialist teacher and all pupils have two hours of PE timetabled per week to develop the core skills they need to become well-rounded sportsmen and women.

Beyond the Curriculum: Clubs, Competitions & Community Links

At Pakeman, we are passionate about enrichment and community engagement in PE:

Sports Clubs & Competitions

A range of extra-curricular sports clubs are available, including football, yoga and multi-sports.
We take part in Islington inter-school competitions, giving children the chance to represent the school and develop teamwork, resilience, and a competitive spirit.
Workshops & Coaching
We often work with specialist coaches and outside agencies to provide exciting workshops and series of skill-based training sessions. This includes special coaching sessions for key sports such as cricket, tennis and disability sports.

Healthy Schools Initiative

We are committed to promoting physical and mental well-being as part of the Healthy Schools programme. This includes:

  • Active playtimes with structured activities
  • Movement breaks in class
  • A focus on healthy lifestyles and nutrition in PE lessons

Community Fitness Opportunities

Pakeman is proud to support not only our pupils but also the wider community. We offer free adult fitness classes to support parents and local residents in staying active and healthy. These sessions provide a welcoming space for all levels of fitness and encourage family involvement in leading an active lifestyle.

How to help your child at home

Parents and carers can help reinforce the importance of physical activity by:

  • Encouraging daily active play, walking, or cycling/scooting to school
  • Taking part in free local sports opportunities
  • Signing children up for after-school sports clubs at Pakeman or local sports centers
  • Attending adult community fitness classes at Pakeman
  • Promoting healthy habits, such as hydration, good nutrition, and adequate rest

Swimming

Year 4, 5 and 6 children have a ‘two week block’ of daily swimming lessons. This is equivalent to 1o weeks of ‘weekly swimming lessons’ for each year group. These take place at Caledonian Road Swimming Pool and are  provided by professional swimming instructors. This ensures that children can build on their skills on a daily basis intensely.

Children should be able to swim at least one full length and we aim for them to be confident swimmers by the end of Year 6.

Swimming data analysis for 2024 (Year 6)

  • Swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres:  85%
  • Use a range of strokes effectively: 80%
  • Perform safe self-rescue in a range of water-based situations: 95%
