COMPUTING
The Vision
At Pakeman Primary School, our vision for the computing curriculum is to equip children with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive in the rapidly evolving digital era. Through a comprehensive approach that encompasses digital literacy, computer science, and information technology, we aim to foster critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, ensuring that every child becomes technologically adept and confident. As technology continues to develop at a fast pace, we are committed to preparing our students for the future by helping them understand the tools and systems that shape our world. By developing strong foundations in these three areas, our children will be empowered to access a wide range of career opportunities and contribute meaningfully to an increasingly digital society, paving the way for their future success.
Curriculum Coverage
At Pakeman Primary School, our computing curriculum follows the National Curriculum and is enhanced by a bespoke curriculum developed specifically for Islington schools. Through this curriculum, children gain a comprehensive understanding of digital literacy, information technology, and computer science. In digital literacy, students learn how to use technology responsibly and keep themselves safe online. In information technology, they acquire essential everyday skills such as word processing, creating presentations, and working with spreadsheets, while also gaining a foundational knowledge of how technology works. In computer science, students explore coding, reading, and debugging algorithms and programs, learning to evaluate problems and think critically to solve them. We ensure our students engage with a diverse range of platforms, including Scratch, Google Classroom, Common Sense Media, iMovie, Busy Things, J2 Animate, photography, and GarageBand. These tools provide fun, interactive, and accessible experiences that support learning across all areas of the curriculum, while also equipping children with practical, real-world skills they can use in the future.

How to help your child at home
As parents, it’s important to guide children in developing a healthy relationship with technology. Encourage your children to be confident with devices, using them creatively for learning and play, but also ensure they have time away from screens to explore other interests, engage in physical activity, and nurture their social skills. Set device-free meal times to foster conversation and connection, and prioritize reading real books at bedtime to promote relaxation and imagination. To support healthy sleep, avoid blue light screens at least an hour before bed. Teach kindness online, reminding children to be respectful and thoughtful in their digital interactions, and make sure they understand the importance of privacy—never sharing personal information. Additionally, ensure your children are the appropriate age for social media platforms, and monitor their usage to protect them from potential risks. With a balanced approach, technology can be a positive tool for learning, creativity, and connection while also supporting physical and emotional well-being.
