SPANISH
The Vision
Learning a language opens doors to new cultures, broadens horizons, and fosters a love for communication. At Pakeman, our aim is to ensure that all children develop the confidence, enthusiasm, and skills needed to express themselves in Spanish, equipping them for a world that is increasingly interconnected. We build strong foundations in speaking, listening, reading, and writing, whilst also exploring Spanish-speaking cultures.
We strive to create a supportive and inclusive environment where every child, regardless of their starting point, can thrive and develop a lifelong love of language learning.
Curriculum Coverage
We teach Spanish across Key Stage 2, ensuring that children build their skills progressively over two-year cycles. All lessons include a balance of speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities, with a strong focus on building confidence and enjoyment. Using Language Angels Spanish scheme of work, we cover:
- Years 3 & 4 – Introducing key vocabulary and simple sentence structures through topics such as greetings, numbers, colours, family, and food. Pupils begin to express likes and dislikes, describe people and places, and ask simple questions. Songs, games, and role-play help embed learning in an engaging way.
- Years 5 & 6 – Expanding fluency in speaking and writing, developing grammar knowledge (including verb conjugation), and using different tenses. Pupils learn to hold conversations, write longer sentences, and explore Spanish-speaking cultures in greater depth, preparing them for secondary school language learning.

How to help your child at home
Parents and carers can support children’s Spanish learning at home in simple, enjoyable ways:
- Practise key phrases together – Encourage your child to greet you in Spanish, talk about their day, or name objects around the house.
- Use language apps safely – Free apps like Duolingo, BBC Bitesize, or Language Angels (home access) provide fun activities and games. However, we recommend that parents supervise their child’s use of apps, ensure privacy settings are in place, and ensure there are no online interactions.
- Watch Spanish cartoons or listen to songs – Hearing the language regularly helps with pronunciation and comprehension.
- Label household items in Spanish – Post-it notes on doors, furniture, or food items reinforce vocabulary in a natural way.
- Read simple Spanish books – Many websites offer free online stories with audio narration. Again, we recommend that parents supervise their children when they are online.
