ART AND DESIGN

Vision

At Pakeman Primary School our vision for art and design curriculum across EYFS, Key Stage 1, and Key Stage 2 is to foster creativity, self-expression, and critical thinking through a progressive and inclusive approach. Beginning with hands-on exploration and sensory experiences in EYFS, children will be introduced to a variety of materials, techniques, and concepts. In Key Stage 1, the focus will shift to developing foundational skills and an understanding of different art forms, while in Key Stage 2, students will refine their artistic techniques and critical thinking, encouraging them to create, interpret, and respond to art in deeper ways. Throughout their journey, children will be exposed to a wide range of artists, both historical and contemporary, from diverse cultures and backgrounds, broadening their understanding of the world and inspiring their own creative work. The curriculum will ensure that every child has the opportunity to explore, experiment, and reflect, nurturing a lifelong appreciation for art and design.

Curriculum coverage

EYFS: An art and design curriculum in EYFS supports children’s creativity by encouraging exploration with materials, tools, and techniques. It helps develop fine motor skills, understanding of shapes, colours, and textures, and provides opportunities for self-expression. Children engage in activities that stimulate imagination, observation, and confidence in their artistic abilities.

Key Stage 1: In Key Stage 1, the art and design curriculum focuses on building foundational skills and creativity through a variety of materials and techniques. Children learn to use their drawing, painting, and sculpture skills to explore shape, form, and texture. They are introduced to basic elements of design and are encouraged to express their ideas and experiences through art. The curriculum also includes observing and responding to the work of artists, fostering an appreciation of different styles and media.

Key Stage 2: In Key Stage 2, students build on their skills by exploring more complex techniques and refining their artistic expression. They develop a deeper understanding of color, tone, pattern, and texture, experimenting with a wider range of media. The curriculum emphasizes creating and evaluating their own artwork, as well as understanding the work of diverse artists from different cultures and historical periods. Critical thinking and reflective skills are encouraged, with students considering the impact of art in society and using their creativity to communicate ideas and emotions.

How to help your child at home

Parents can support their children’s art and design development at home by encouraging creativity and providing a variety of materials for exploration, such as crayons, paints, clay, and recycled items for crafting. Creating a dedicated space for art and allowing time for free expression fosters confidence and experimentation. Discussing different artists and their work, exploring nature, and visiting galleries or museums can also inspire and broaden children’s artistic understanding. Most importantly, praising effort and creativity helps build a positive attitude towards art and design.
